I don’t know why, but sweet fragrances just work. Despite all their simplicity and sometimes complete lack of depth, it’s the sweet scents that dominate sales, comparisons, and even gift choices.
Mod Vanilla is a good example of how a commercial fragrance can be stitched together from a killer dose of vanillin, ethyl vanillin, and ethyl maltol. The scent opens with a pear note reminiscent of “Duchess” soda, coming from 0.4% Hexyl Acetate. Almost immediately after the pear, the eye-watering sweetness of vanilla and ethyl maltol emerges, totaling a hefty 12%.
From the formula it’s obvious that the brief must have mentioned the name Baccarat Rouge 540, since in the base we find a generous dose of ambroxan with evernyl — which, to be fair, is what saves the composition from being completely banal.
Olfactory profile: fruity, sweet, musky.
Concentration: eau de toilette.
